EPL Motivational Profiles

The EPL research shows that there are 8 possible motivational profiles based on the E, P and L career dimensions. Your CAS survey results will show your motivational profile, which may change as you gather more work experiences. Motivational profiles are different from EPL efficacy profiles which are about one’s perceived abilities in E, P or L career spaces.

Using your EPL Motivational Profile as a Career Strategy

  • When you have a clear interest and inclination for the respective E, P and L domains, you can be more certain of your career paths and decisions. Examples of how you can use your EPL motivational profile are as follows:

    • If you have a High E profile, you could consider becoming an entrepreneur and start up your business. You will not be attracted to join any established organisation and you are less likely to enjoy taking directions from others. You should consider working with others who have complementary strengths in the P and L domains.
    • If you have a High P profile, you could consider jobs where you will be able to apply most of your professional knowledge and skills. In other words, you might not be attracted to jobs that come with a managerial, administrative or leadership role. You should consider working with others who have complementary strengths in the E and L domains.
    • If you have High L profile, you could consider joining organisations where you are valued more for your leadership skills and experiences than your other skills (technical/professional). For example, you could join the uniformed organisations like the police force or the military. You should consider working with others who have complementary strengths in the E and P domains.
    • If you have a High EP profile, you will enjoy starting your own business if you are able to create a new product or demand based on your professional knowledge and skills that drive such a business. Alternatively, you could be more interested in being an entrepreneur in your professional domain where you have the depth of professional knowledge and skills to understand how to run a business in an industry that applies your professional knowledge and skills. For example, if you have a degree in Civil Engineering, you can create your own construction business to meet a specific demand/need in the construction industry. You should consider working with others who have complementary strengths in the L domain.
    • If you have a High EL profile, you could be the businessman and leader at the same time. You could be the Chief Executive Officer or Managing Director of your own enterprise making key decisions relating to the business while influencing and motivating your employees at work. You should consider working with others who have complementary strengths in the P domain.
    • If you have a High PL profile, you could consider jobs where you can apply your professional knowledge and skills while influencing and motivating others. For example, you could become a teacher who (1) enjoys teaching your favourite subject and (2) influencing young minds through positive role-modeling.  You should consider working with others who have complementary strengths in the E domain.
    • If you have a High EPL profile, you could be entrepreneurial in a particular industry inventing new ideas to start or grow your own enterprise while applying your depth of professional expertise to run the business as well as leading your workers to achieve the vision of your company. Or, within an organisation, you could be someone who applies your depth of your professional knowledge and skills to invent new ideas or improve business processes while providing the supervision and motivating and leading your team to achieve your organisation’s vision and goals.
  • Check to see if your motivational profile is supported by the relevant EPL competencies and skills (see more on EPL efficacies). For example, if you have a High EL motivational profile, check that you have the related E and L skills. If you do not have enough of these skills, you can then focus on developing the skills for E and L tasks and to achieve your career goals.
